I try not to make statements on this blog that are so bold and opinionated that people will want to argue with me or feel bad that I have said something so strongly, but I am going to have to do it here.
If you are considering adoption, have adopted, are in the process of adoption, or even if you want to support an adoptive family the very best thing you can do is attend an Empowered to Connect conference (or make use of the resources they provide).
Andy I were told about this from some other adoptive families so we signed up ages ago for the April conference in Denver and we did not regret: taking a day off work, paying for the tickets, or sitting for two full days at a conference.
If you have already adopted, don't feel bad. It's not too late! You can see the resources this organization produces online, you can read Dr. Karyn Purvis's book (The Connected Child), you can view videos online, listen to audio from previous conferences--everything! They really do make it easy and inexpensive to educate yourself on how to best parent adopted children.
If you are in the process of adopting- please stop getting the room ready, raising funds, or making plans for your which school your children will attend and read the book, watch some videos or buy tickets to attend the next conference- you won't regret it either!
We found this conference such a breath of fresh air, so informative and so positive! We were able to get on the same page about parenting these kids (of course there will be ups and downs and we will argue and disagree- I'm not in fairy tale land here) we were better able to understand the needs they may have, their brain chemistry and how what they have experienced has impacted them so far. We learned together, we discussed what we learned and we left those two days ready for the children God will bring into our lives.
If you or someone you know is considering adoption this is an incredible resource to have in your arsenal!
